If so, read on! We have an exciting development opportunity for a Data Engineer to join our team! The role is being advertised as a B2 (HEO) to B1 (SEO) development role and is an exciting opportunity for candidates with a core understanding of Data Engineering who have a real aptitude and interest in developing their technical skills, along with their technical leadership skills.

You will be given training, mentoring and support to build your role specific skills by following a defined development plan. You will start on the B2 (HEO) salary (currently £34,369 - £36,045 pa) and once assessed as being competent in the role, you will be promoted to B1 (SEO) salary (currently £43,889 - £46,483 pa) – we anticipate this will be in the region of 1 to 2 years after starting in the role but will be governed by your development. You may also be entitled to a Recruitment and Retention Allowance of up to £10k on top of your basic salary.

Job description

As a data engineer at the UKHO you will be responsible for feature development within projects delivered by data engineering and works with the team to design and deliver production quality data pipelines or services. This will include a mix of stakeholder engagement, prioritization of your own tasks, and building of appropriate solutions using technologies such distributed computing, serverless architectures and machine learning.

You will have the opportunity to take on a wide range of challenging and rewarding work, including:

  • Designing, building, testing and deployment of features within production data pipelines and associated software systems.
  • Evaluating technologies and leading exploratory tasks (spikes).
  • Communicating project-level challenges or risks to the senior data engineers.
  • Presenting work to the wider team and to stakeholders.
  • Helping to set standards, coaching, and sharing knowledge with other data engineers.

Person specification

Ideally you would also have the following experience, but this is a bonus rather than essential, and can be developed in role:

  • History of supporting junior team members in their personal development.
  • Capable of recognising technical debt and flagging it to the team.

SC – non reserved
This is a Ministry of Defence non-reserved post and although open to UK, British Commonwealth and European Economic Area nationals, successful applicants will require a security clearance (SC) and therefore need to have resided in the UK for a minimum of 12 consecutive months within the last 5 years.

Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrable experience of pipeline logging

Technical Skills:

  • The test consists of a conceptual scenario that will be sent to the candidate a few days before their interview. During interview the candidate will be asked to discuss each of the questions posed in the scenario. It is expected that the preparation time for the test should be about 1 hour. The criteria scored against will be:

    • Data ingest and pipeline building
    • Data storage and cataloguing
    • Approach to delivering software
    • Stakeholder engagement

  • Single Stage Interview via TEAMS. You will be contacted to book a suitable slot if you are shortlisted (see our Candidate Pack for further information)

Onboarding Checks:
