Work for a small team milking over 300 cows, day-to-day farming particularly milking, learning skills of cattle husbandry, tractors and machinery operation and farm maintenance tasks. Take responsibility for the milking process, scraping yards and bedding up cubicles (with self-propelled machine), cleaning out and bedding up straw yards.

The roles training and responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Milking and dairy management
  • Calf rearing
  • Monitoring and maintaining health and safety
  • Maintain and develop personal performance
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with others
  • Establish and maintain conditions appropriate to the welfare of animals
  • Prepare and operate a tractor with attachments
  • Maintain site bio-security and personal hygiene
  • Monitor and maintain the supply of feed and water to livestock
  • Monitor and maintain livestock on outdoor sites
  • Prepare for the transport of animals
  • Deliver basic treatments to livestock
  • General farm cleanliness

Accommodation in the form of a self-contained flat with shower room on site will be available.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Good Communicator
  • Driving Licence would be desirable
  • Tractor driving experience / licence would also be preferable but not essential
  • Livestock handling experience preferable but not essential
  • Ability to listen to instruction, and carry out tasks given efficiently
  • Strong interest and enthusiasm for dairying and agriculture

Personal qualities

  • A reliable and confident individual would suit this role
  • Computer skills would be useful

Desired qualifications

You will need to have obtained GCSE (or equivalent) in English and maths.

Future prospects

May lead to permanent employment for the right candidate on completion of the apprenticeship.

Things to consider

Must be able to get to and from the place of work in a safe and timely manner.
