Energus are delighted to be working in partnership with Cyclife to recruit a Waste Management Degree Apprentice to be based at their site in Workington, West Cumbria.

We facilitate award winning Graduate and Apprenticeship Programmes nationally on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and the wider nuclear industry. We address skills shortages across the nuclear industry and ensure a continuous pipeline of talent into the industry.

A brand of the EDF Group, Cyclife is a leader in Europe in radioactive waste management, as well as the decommissioning and the dismantling of nuclear facilities. Cyclife meets its customers’ challenges and anticipates their needs to manage and protect valuable disposal capacities.


Cyclife has industrial sites for the treatment of radioactive waste in France (Bagnols-sur-Cèze), the United Kingdom (Workington) and Sweden (Nyköping). The brand has an entity, Cyclife Engineering located in Lyon (France), dedicated to engineering and project management for the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear power plants as well as for the design of waste storage and treatment facilities. As for its subsidiary Cyclife Digital Solutions located in Bagnols-Cèze (France), it offers a decision support and intervention simulation tool, the DEMplus® for nuclear software based on real-time 3D technologies to obtain calculations combining costs, lead times, waste and dosimetry.


Cyclife, Workington - The Cyclife MRF (Metal Recycling Facility) is designed to support the United Kingdom’s Low-Level Waste Strategy. It is a nuclear licensed site and environmentally permitted facility that is regulated by the ONR (Office for Nuclear Regulation) and the EA (Environment Agency).
The site has an assurance program that covers all aspects of safety, health, environment, quality and security that monitors all aspects of the business operations.
Because all our stakeholders - customers, regulators, employees and the public Cyclife’s number one priority is to ensure that radioactive waste will be managed to the highest standards of safety and environmental protection.

Responsibilities:

Your Waste Management Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6)


Your Employment:


For the duration of your degree apprenticeship you will work on behalf of Cyclife, however you will be employed by Energus.


In return for this opportunity, there is an expectation that you will take up a substantive role within Cyclife upon completion of this apprenticeship, this will be subject to satisfactory performance.


Your Apprenticeship Programme and Qualification:

This apprenticeship is delivered in line with Apprenticeship Standard ST0289 – It will be delivered by National College for Nuclear at Lakes College, West Cumbria, in conjunction with the University of Cumbria.

The Honours Degree in Science provides a higher education scientific experience for the student in decommissioning & waste management. The course has been designed to provide a combination of extensive practical work supported by academic studies with a unique experience within the National College for Nuclear Northern Hub. The aim of the programme is to provide work ready scientists with the relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours to work within a highly technical environment.

During the honours degree you will study on one of three pathways with topic areas which will include:

Professional Development
Radioactive Waste Storage & Environmental Impact
Radiological Measurement & Laboratory
Project Management in Nuclear
Robot Systems, Configuration & Programming

The course will be delivered on a block release basis providing opportunities for students to undertake individual modules supporting continuous professional development. A range of delivery methods will be utilised during studies with a large emphasis on ‘learning from doing’. This will include the use of a virtual realty suite enabling the students to experience industrial systems and situations within a safe environment. In addition the students will have the opportunity to work within the brand new National College for Nuclear Northern Hub, with state of the art equipment preparing for real work experiences and real industrial scenarios. A large proportion of the student activity will be with project work.


Responsibilities


This apprenticeship will cover a broad range of knowledge, skillsand behavioursthat you will require to be effective within your role at Cyclife.


At the end of the apprenticeship you will utilising the following occupational knowledge and skills in your role at Cyclife:

  • Working competently in a technical nuclear environment, understand and promote personal responsibility for Health, Safety, Radiation Protection, Environmental Protection, Quality, Security, Safeguards and principles of Risk Management.
  • Analysing engineering and scientific problems
  • Developing and critically applying knowledge of the concepts, principles and theories of engineering science relevant to the interdisciplinary fields of nuclear technology.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of stakeholder requirements, commercial awareness, business improvement, project and business management techniques relevant to the nuclear industry.
  • Applying your science or engineering discipline knowledge to the development, operation, maintenance and progression of technologies used for Decommissioning (e.g. remote handling and robotics), Waste Management, Reprocessing, and Nuclear Power Generation.
  • Specifying, planning, managing, conducting and reporting on nuclear projects
  • Synthesising information from a variety of sources and apply to the solution of a particular nuclear technology application.
  • Accurately observing, recording and drawing conclusions from data and experimental evidence, recognising inherent uncertainties and limitations.
  • Applying design processes including materials selection that meet nuclear industry standards.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of Regulatory requirements both national and international.
  • Developing technical reports that meet requirements of the prevailing verification process.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the nuclear industry (past, present and future) and the business, political and community environment in which the company operates including personal role within the organisation, ethical practice and codes of conduct.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of root cause analysis and learning from experience (LFE) processes.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the technology, safety, environmental and economics of nuclear fuels and the nuclear fuel cycle.
  • Applying the standards for nuclear professional practice as required by the industry and professional body institutions.


At the end of the apprenticeship you will demonstrating the following behaviours in your role at Cyclife:

  • Acting as an enthusiastic advocate for the nuclear industry with the ability to represent this industry to a variety of audiences.

Professional Registration:


Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will be eligible to apply for:

  • Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths at grades 9-4 (A*-C)
  • Level 3 qualifications (or equivalent) totalling 96 UCAS points (e.g. 3 x A-level at CCC)
