Requisition Number: 50222
Department: Higher Apprenticeship Programme
Job Function:

About the Role

Ensuring the future of electricity transmission

We don’t think of engineering as a job, we think of it as a legacy. A way of passing on a brighter energy future and keeping the lights on.

Would you like to be part of it?

How about working for a company that makes electricity happen for every single person in England and Wales? A company that invests billions in Net Zero and creating a brighter energy future?

How about being paid over £28,000 a year while you train…with free food, accommodation and travel too?

Our three-year Higher Apprenticeship Telecoms will train you to become a Telecoms engineer in one of our substations.

Our Telecoms Engineers do the behind-the-scenes work which ensures we have one of the world’s most reliable electricity networks. They undertake and manage work on our communication systems, fix faults, make sure contractors are working safely, and help protect the network against cyber-attacks.

You will play a key role in supporting the replacement of Telecoms Equipment, ensuring it meets the demands, and developments for years to come.

You’ll be learning about metering, as we measure the power leaving National Grid to go to a distribution network operator. You could be working on a substation’s telephone system ensuring all safety calls can take place. You might be looking after the communication routes to SCADA, the system that controls all equipment on a substation.

As National Grid implements systems to defend against cyber-attacks there will be opportunities to learn about the technology involved.

By the end of the apprenticeship, you will plan and manage works, source replacement equipment, develop working procedures and establish a safe system of work. You’ll be able to commission, update, and review documentation in an organised, timely manner.

Effective liaison with customers and external contractors, at a variety of management levels, is a key part of delivering these services – hence the ability to communicate clearly and build relationships is very important.

If you’re the sort of person who enjoys fixing things, and using your practical, engineering mindset to make things better, we’d really like to talk to you.

About You

You’re driven and proactive, with an appetite for continuous improvement. You know how to build on your existing knowledge and skills and have the enthusiasm to run with things and to try to make them better. You’re articulate and know how to communicate appropriately with a variety of people.

You are a flexible multitasker who can do multiple jobs at the same time and still pay great attention to detail. It’s doesn’t matter if you’re not academically dazzling; we want practical people with engineering mindsets who are really keen to apply themselves.

Our Higher Apprenticeships are for people who have two A-Levels, including Maths, or a BTECH which includes a Maths module graded C or above.

You’ll need a valid driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK 3 months before your start date.

You must be able to stay away from home, primarily at our Eakring academy in Nottinghamshire.

What You’ll Get

We are proud to offer a starting salary of £28,332.
