The OUH is establishing a Total Lung Health Check service for Oxfordshire, and we are seeking a radiographer with sound radiographic experience, who will contribute positively and enthusiastically to the CT Service at the Horton and the Total Lung Health Check Servcie across Oxfrodshire. The post is suitable for a CT radiographer keen on supporting a the new TLHC Service, working with state of the art equipment and optimising image techniques.

This is a unique opportunity to transform and improve the health of our local populations through a nationally directed initiative – the ‘Targeted Lung Health Check’ programme. The aim of the project is to provide a lung health check assessment (with low dose CT where clinically indicated) with a view to diagnosing lung cancer at an early stage. CCGs have been selected nationally based on deprivation, presentation of late stage and rates of lung cancer mortality. Patients between the ages of 55 to 74 with a smoking history will be invited to attend for the lung health check.

This work will give the successful candidate an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to a team to deliver a different kind of work to identify asymptomatic people, providing early diagnosis of both lung cancer and other lung diseases and then planning appropriate follow-up.

Opportunities are available for personal and professional development and commitment to an out of hours and weekend service is required.

The main duties would be to work as part of the CT teams to provide a 7 day services to patients attending the Horton Radiology Department, and the Total Lung Health Check Programme on mobile units across Oxfordshire.

There would also be a requirement to work across the radiology directorate as and when required.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST:

• To work as part of the imaging department team providing a comprehensive and effective diagnostic radiographic service, carrying out specific responsibilities commensurate with a senior grade.
• To contribute to a working environment in which patients can obtain optimum care.
• To undertake highly skilled clinical working within CT at both static and mobile locations.
• To provide guidance, supervision and support and participate in the training of Trainee Assistant Practitioners, Student Radiographers and act as a mentor for newly qualified staff.
• To independently assess each patient and adapt radiographic techniques according to the needs of the patient.
• To use professional discretion and experience to ensure that clinical practice is performed professionally and within the legal framework.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To perform examinations across CT on a range of patient types both as an autonomous practitioner and as part of a multi professional team, in a manner that meets professional, departmental and legal standards and requirements.
1. To assess and justify referrals under Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000, (IR(ME)R 2000), following practitioner guidelines.
1. To independently assess each patient and adapt radiographic techniques according to the needs of the patient.
1. To vet within guidelines and assess referrals as required.
1. To advise medical and non-medical referrers as to the appropriate radiological investigation as required.
1. To undertake formal training in role extension as required and in accordance with departmental policies and requirements.
1. To supervise student radiographers, and act as a mentor for newly qualified staff.
1. To provide professional and emotional support to peers and junior staff.
1. To relate to all patients with understanding and care, respecting their privacy and dignity to provide a caring and confidential service.
1. To perform intravenous contrast agent injections when required, subject to satisfactory completion of a recognised course of training.
1. To demonstrate dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail in the preparation of specialist equipment for procedures to be undertaken within the unit whilst adhering to Local and Trust policies e.g. intravenous drug administration, taking blood samples.
1. To be able to use the departmental Radiology Information System, Computerised Radiography system and the Picture Archiving Communication System following training.
1. To manage own workload and organise departmental workload when necessary.
1. To supervise areas of the department in the absence of more senior staff.
1. To have a flexible approach to working hours.
1. To work Saturdays and Sundays as required, as part of extending the working week.
1. To undertake the departmental and Trust induction Programme.
1. To adhere to all Trust policies including Health & Safety Regulations, COSHH Regulations, and the Data Protection Act.
1. To comply with all radiation protection policies such as IR(ME)R the Code of Practice for the Protection of Persons against Ionising Radiations arising from Medical and Dental use and the IRR 99 Regulations.
1. To adhere to safe systems of work with regard to manual handling.
1. To be aware of all Quality Control procedures with the department, including Quality Assurance testing for image quality and equipment safety, and to perform clinical audits within the department.
1. To participate in the Department and Directorate Audit and Clinical Governance Programs
1. To be responsible in the use of expensive diagnostic radiology equipment to ensure that the patient, carer, relatives and operator remain safe from the physical and radiation hazards associated with it.
1. To perform specialist procedures with complex equipment in a safe manner (and to train and supervise others when appropriate)
1. To undertake CT Imaging at other locations as required.
1. To undertake any reasonable further duties as required when requested by the Clinical Professional Manager.
