The post holder will report to the Manual Handling Advisor, particularly on feedback from training including any issues that may have arisen during training, or problems identified in the workplace. The post holder will also need to work closely with: - Risk & Safety Officer on the planning and content of training. Risk Support Officer in respect of the administrative elements of training.

Manual Handling Training Assistant as line manager. Ward / dept managers, and other key trainers and workplace assessors on training and assessment issues. Head of Health, Safety & Fire, and other members of the Health, Safety & Fire Team, particularly the Personal Safety Advisor, on other health and safety and team matters. Knowledge, Training and Experience Must hold a relevant professional healthcare qualification e.g.

nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, radiographer etc. Significant post registration experience of working within a healthcare setting where patient moving and handling skills and equipment were used. Must have attended a Train the Trainer course in people handling which includes presentation skills, that meets the requirements of the National Back Exchange Inter-professional framework curriculum and standards for training. A relevant post-graduate teaching qualification e.g.

City & Guilds Certificate in Education. Be able to demonstrate good presentation, verbal and written skills Preferably be working towards a recognised post-graduate course in manual handling, back care or ergonomics. Be able to design, deliver and evaluate patient and inanimate load handling training programmes. Be able to produce a manual handling risk assessment and recommendations for safer practice.

Have successfully completed an approved health and safety management course e.g. IOSH Managing Safely. Be able to identify laws impacting on health and safety, manual handling and client-centred legislation, as well as understanding the importance of the risk assessment process. Show evidence of record-keeping systems for training /supervision/assessment activity.

Demonstrate a practical problem solving approach to moving and handling issues, based on evidence-based practice. Be familiar with the care and use of patient handling equipment used in the organisation. Be physically capable of delivering practical training on a daily basis, which will included repetitive demonstrations of patient and inanimate load handling techniques. Promote patient independence, and minimal or safer lifting approaches, use of equipment, and ergonomic / environmental changes as required to minimise risks.

Demonstrate evidence to keep abreast of developments in the field by attendance at meetings, conferences, workshops, reading relevant journal articles etc and preferably be a member of National Back Exchange. Revised All Wales NHS Manual Handling Passport Scheme 2015) Analytical and Judgmental Skills The post holder will be required to: - ensure that the content of training addresses identified training needs, if necessary, discussing additional content, or removal of unnecessary content with the Manual Handling Advisor and / or Risk Support Officer.

plan and deliver training to meet the requirements of the lesson plan and evaluate each session. analyse problems or issues raised during the training session which may involve complex handling issues or require specialist advice. The post holder will need to decide on an appropriate course of action e.g. whether it is appropriate to address the issue in the training room, or, the workplace, as some issues may involve confidential information relating to specific patients with complex needs.

Decide whether further advice is required e.g. from the Manual Handling Advisor. formally assess the theoretical and practical competence of patient and inanimate load handling staff from all disciplines within the University Health Board. Reporting the outcome of such assessments to the individual and their line manager.

analyse evaluation information and feedback from trainees in order to review the effectiveness of the training provided. This will be reported to the Manual Handling Advisor and Risk & Safety Officer and taken into consideration when reviewing the training packages. Making a decision whether to pass or fail a student during a competence assessment, which is particularly difficult if they are borderline, or if patient or environment factors might have impacted on the persons performance in the workplace. Analysing a students performance and considering referral for coaching and re assessment for update training or for complete re training.

Planning and Organisational Skills The post holder will be required to: - Schedule a training programme to meet the needs of the organisation including foundation and update training for patient and inanimate load handling staff. This will be done in conjunction with the Manual Handling Advisor, Risk & Safety Officer and Risk Support Officer. Contribute to the development of lesson plans for the range of training courses required ensuring that the requirements of Core Skills for Health Framework & the Revised All Wales NHS Passport Scheme are met. This will be done in conjunction with the Risk & Safety Officer.

Liaise with the Risk Support Officer in the administration of training such as booking rooms, advertising course dates, providing course information to nominees, maintaining training database by recording training provided and results of any workplace competence assessments undertaken by the Manual Handling Trainer. Ensure all resources are available for delivery of the training session including attendance sheet, training documentation, equipment etc. Monitor training attendance compliance and follow-up any non-attendance at training with the appropriate manager. Maintain accurate training records including attendance, the competence or non-competence of trainees for all required techniques, a training log detailing any issues or deviation from the lesson plan.

Physical Skills The post holder will be required to: - Deliver patient handling training for up to 12 trainees with the assistance of the Manual Handling Training Assistant. Deliver inanimate load handling training for up to 8 trainees without assistance. Be competent and physically capable of demonstrating / undertaking all patient and inanimate load handling techniques/manoeuvres as indicated in the Core Skills for Health Framework, the Revised Manual Handling Passport Scheme, and/or included in the Health Boards Patient Handling Techniques Manual. Be competent and physically capable of using the full range of patient handling equipment provided for use in the organisation.

Be competent in undertaking techniques and/or using equipment provided for use in the organisation that is in addition to those indicated in the Core Skills for Health Framework or the Revised Manual Handling Passport Scheme e.g. Emergency Lifting Cushions and Scoop Stretchers etc. Stand for prolonged periods of time when delivering training, observing trainees and assessing the competence of staff. This will be required on a daily basis.

Be computer literate and able to use Microsoft Office software programmes to prepare reports, presentations, training materials etc. Be able to travel between UHB sites if and when required to undertake workplace assessments or demonstrate the use of patient handling equipment in the workplace. Patient/Client Care Responsibilities Although the post holder will not have regular patient care responsibilities, there may be an occasional requirement to provide patient care assistance should the need arise whilst in the clinical environment undertaking workplace assessments. Previous recent experience of working in a healthcare setting where patient handling activities and use of patient handling equipment were required is important in order have the background knowledge and skills to draw upon to competently deal with queries in the training room and when training staff in undertaking patient moving and handling risk assessments.
