About the role

Control and Instrumentation Engineer - Isle of Grain, Kent

We’re looking for a talented Control & Instrumentation Engineer to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of National Grid Isle of Grain’s Liquefied natural gas (LNG’s) assets through adherence and application of BSEN61511and DSEAR in line with the sites COMAH requirements.


You’ll join a dynamic team to be responsible for the safe and time bound completion of a range of duties pertaining to the terminal’s compliance of the required standards. You’ll act as the technical appraisal/approver in the Management of Change process and be responsible for embedding a culture of continuous improvement. In this role you’ll be part of an effective and motivated workforce providing visible and front-line engagement with the LNG terminal engineers, technicians and key stakeholders, and be responsible for adherence to terminal safety guidelines.


This is a unique opportunity to continuously develop a combination of technical and business skills at Europe’s largest largest Liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.


This role is based on-site at our world-class facility in Kent.

About you

You’ll be an excellent communicator, who can ensure that information is understood by all individuals within and outside the team and able to tackle issues to give satisfactory resolution. Effective people management skills are key for this role, as are strong project management skills, including management of risk for deliverables to scope, time, and cost.


Technically, you will have:

  • Knowledge of industry standards including COMAH, ATEX, DSEAR, EMMUA 191, NAMUR & UKAS.
  • Thorough understanding of gas processing plant and machinery and/or proven experience in the petrochemical or Nuclear industry.
  • Detailed knowledge of BSEN61511, ATEX directive and requirements for compliance.
  • Experience in HAZOP, SIL proof testing, calibration of field devices and fire and gas detection systems.
  • Experience with the use of technical drawings, plots and vendor documentation.
  • Understanding of industrial control system cyber security techniques and practices.
  • HNC/Degree in Engineering Discipline or equivalent.
