We are recruiting for an additional and new full-time Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist with community and functional inpatient responsibilities to work in the borough of Torfaen, based at Ty Siriol, County Hospital, Pontypool.

The borough of Torfaen is one of five local authority areas in Gwent, served by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. It has an estimated over 65 years old population of 19,543, representing approximately 16% of the wider Gwent older adult population.

Ty Siriol is a purpose-built OAMH unit which houses both inpatient and community services. Hafan Deg is a 20-bed ward providing specialist care to older adults with functional mental illness from across Gwent. Co-located in Ty Siriol is also the community and outpatient base for Torfaen OACMHT and Memory team. The inpatient, community and memory teams are fully multidisciplinary with dedicated nurse, OT and Psychology staffing.

The Consultant will have their own office in Ty Siriol and support from Medical Secretary and team admin. Health board IT equipment and support will also be provided.

Local community hospital services, including CoTE rehab and community frailty, are also provided on the County Hospital site. Grange University Hospital, the health board’s new specialist critical care hospital is located 4 miles away. Patients also access enhanced local general hospital services at Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport and Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny.

Main duties of the job

This post complements an existing and well-established Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist already based at Ty Siriol.

The Consultant for this post will act as Responsible Clinician for approximately half the functional inpatients admitted to Hafan Deg ward, the remaining half being looked after by the other Ty Siriol based consultant psychiatrist.

The two consultants will divide community and memory service responsibilities each covering named GP surgeries in Torfaen. The precise division of work will be coordinated with the unit senior nurse (operational manager) with oversight from the Clinical Director.

The Consultant for this post will also have a job-planned commitment to support and provide clinical leadership to the ECT service (specialist training will be provided if needed).

The two Ty Siriol based Consultants will be supported by a Specialty Doctor, a GPVTS trainee doctor and a part-time core psychiatry trainee.

The Consultant will act as clinical supervisor to any attached rotational junior medical staff and will be expected to participate in health board psychiatric and medical undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes.

The Consultant will be expected to engage with relevant clinical governance activities and will be encouraged to be involved in service development and patient quality & safety improvement initiatives.

The Consultant will be expected and supported to undertake relevant CPD activities, identified through appraisal and job-planning
