Job Overview

We are pleased to invite applications for a Consultant in Orthodontics for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), working across North Wales. This is a great opportunity for an individual who would be interested in clinical sessions within specialist practice, should applicants wish to undertake work in both primary and secondary care. This substantive post is for up to 12 sessions although applications for part time or job sharing will be considered.

There is potential for the successful candidate(s) to be eligible for the nationally agreed Welsh “Golden Hello” financial incentive and the health Board would be willing to negotiate on the starting salary. In addition, the post is subject to the Welsh Consultant contract, which has significant benefits when compared to the English Contract. This includes agreater number of supporting professional activity (SPA) sessions within the job plan and faster pay progression. Generous relocation packages are also available.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will collaborate with enthusiastic and supportive colleagues across the region to enhance the comprehensive Consultant service for North Wales. The post involves the treatment of severe and complex malocclusions to the highest standard. There is an emphasis on multi-disciplinary management including orthognathic surgery and collaboration with restorative dentistry. There are opportunities to provide local orthodontic care as part of the Regional Cleft Lip and Palate Network. We have strong academic, teaching and training links with Liverpool Dental Hospital, Bangor and Edge Hill Universities, along with quarterly Mersey, Cheshire & North Wales regional audit and consultant group meetings.

Working for our organisation

The North Wales Dental Academy was created in 2022, as a collaboration between BCUHB, Cardiff Dental School, Bangor University, Health Education & Improvement Wales, and Welsh Government. The Academy aims to assist in the development of additional clinical and educational skills within North Wales, utilising the state-of-the-art educational facilities in Bangor and a network of dental and specialist practices throughout North Wales. There is scope for the appointee(s) to be actively involved with this project and undertake teaching, training and research as part of their job plan.

The Health Board is very keen to encourage staff to develop their wider professional skills, which will benefit the local population and the NHS. The Health Board will be open to supporting the successful applicant(s) with both funding and time within their job plan to pursue appropriate professional development including gaining additional qualifications.

It is home to three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and three UNESCO World Heritage Sites spread across the rugged mountains and stunning coastal scenery. There are a wealth of sporting and cultural activities to enjoy. North Wales has many award winning theatres and restaurants including those with Michelin Star grading. There are excellent road and rail links to the nearby cities of Chester, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham as well as London.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Full GDC Registration
  • Specialist Membership in Orthodontics or equivalent
  • Be on the GDC Specialist Register in Orthodontics

Desirable criteria

  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Orthodontics, or equivalent before commencing the post
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CSST in Orthodontics
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery or equivalent
  • MSc or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Successful completion of an SAC approved minimum two year training in a fixed term training appointment (Post-CCST/FTTA) in Orthodontics or within six months of completion of training which follows on from the pre-CCST training period of 3 years or equivalent
  • Commitment to continued professional development through lifelong learning.

Desirable criteria

  • Successful completion of an SAC approved minimum three year training programme in Orthodontics
  • Experience in the management of craniofacial anomalies, including CLP
  • Demonstration of CPD log book

Ability

Essential Criteria

  • Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
  • Counselling and communication skills
  • Up-to-date with current practices in Orthodontics

Desirable criteria

  • Computing skills
