Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit an additional Consultant Ophthalmologistwith interest in providing a full gamut of general ophthalmology services including cataract service, glaucoma services, paediatrics, routine oculoplastic, neuro-ophthalmology and emergency eye services. This new post-holder will work in close collaboration with the existing sub-speciality services already running in the department.This is a new post and the post-holder will continue to further develop the hospital service as well as liaise with the community eye service. The trust already runs Virtual services for AMD, Diabetic retinopathy and Retinal vascular occlusion services to manage the workload and is looking to set up the virtual glaucoma services in near future. It may be possible to do some virtual sessions remotely, if all the safety and governance parameters are met.Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if in a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the regulations all other categories of doctors must be on the GMC Specialist Register to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee. Applicants must continue to hold a License to Practise.Main duties of the jobThe Ophthalmology service has departments and theatres at three Trust sites (Doncaster, Bassetlaw and Mexborough), but whenever possible split site working within the same day is not included in the job plan. The job plan of the successful candidate plan will be reviewed and agreed annually.The service has an on-call rota for junior grade staff, which is compliant with the European Working Time Directive. On-call is classed as Category A and is a 1:7 Rota, which attracts a 5% on call availability supplement. It is expected to be 1 in 10 when the current phase of recruitment is complete.The service is committed to a strong training culture. Specialty Doctors rotate through a firm based timetable and have protected theatre sessions. There is regular Consultant led teaching on a Friday afternoon and we have recently purchased 3 operating microscopes with HD recording and reviewing capability. There is currently 1 Specialty Trainee (ST4 or 5) from the South Yorkshire training rotation.About UsThe Ophthalmology Department has theatre and outpatient facilities at 3 sites: Doncaster Royal Infirmary (Doncaster), Montagu Hospital (Mexborough), and Bassetlaw Hospital (Worksop), serving a population of approximately 420,000. The service is well equipped, with 5 Heidelberg Spectralis OCTs, 2 Pascal Argon Lasers, Flourescein/ICG Angiography, corneal topography (Pentacam), ocular ultrasound, a slit-lamp camera and 4 Zeiss Lumera 700 operating microscopes. In September 2016 the Fred and Ann Green Eye Centre was completed at Doncaster Royal Infirmary at a cost of nearly �3 million.Job DescriptionJob responsibilities
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in medical and surgical Ophthalmology
  • Provision of outpatient services in sub-specialty and general ophthalmology clinics.
  • To share with colleagues the provision of ophthalmology advice to medical and surgical inpatients
  • To work with colleagues, both medical and nursing to improve and advance the service.
  • To share with colleagues the responsibility for the management of the Department.
  • Teaching and training of trainees, junior medical staff, nursing staff, primary care colleagues and medical students.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).
Person SpecificationQualificationEssential
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • You must be on the specialist register for Ophthalmology or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of Doctors must be eligible to be on the GMC specialist register (evidence required prior to commencement) to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee
  • You must have completed, or be within 6 months of completing, a 12-month RCOphth recognised clinical fellowship, ASTO, or equivalent, within your area of sub-specialty interest

Experience and AchievementsEssential
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Ophthalmology
  • Must be able to operate as an independent cataract surgeon, and demonstrate adequate experience for the supervision of trainees

  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
