Strategic Themes

Great Care
We will deliver safe, high quality, consistent and personalised care based on best practice. We are working to be a responsive organisation that listens and learns.

Great Organisation
We work to be a green organisation, and our sustainability plan will deliver NHS net zero targets. We will support quality care, research and innovation. All our work will be underpinned by clear and transparent principles and systems.

Great People
We will work together with our staff to create an organisation that supports our collective health and wellbeing. We will attract, retain and develop great people, and embed a caring, open, inclusive and restorative just culture that supports us to deliver quality care.

Great Partner
With our partners we will deliver health care that improves people’s quality of life, prevents ill health and reduces inequalities. We will spend our money wisely to achieve high quality outcomes that matter to local people.

At the NHS, we are reminded every day of how important life is. As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement whether that’s job share, part time or another flexible pattern. In addition, although the role advertised may have a ‘home’ office base indicated, we remain committed to supporting flexibility around workplace locations. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

The successful applicant will be an NHS employee and may therefore have contact with vulnerable service users. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been necessary to take significant steps to protect the health and safety of our staff, service users and those attending our sites. Unless exempt, we encourage and support staff to be vaccinated as this remains the best line of defence against COVID-19.

Job overview

Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a consultant liaison psychiatrist to provide clinical leadership to a multi-disciplinary team alongside the two existing part time consultant liaison psychiatrists in our Core 24 service.

The postholder will share the Responsible Clinician role for patients detained under the Mental Health Act to Royal Cornwall Hospital with the existing consultants.

The adult liaison psychiatry service is based in RCH and sees 2,500-3,000 patients annually. Most of these patients are referred by the ED or the Acute Medical Unit. The remainder come from other in-patient wards. There is a case mix including self-harm, suicidal thought, low mood and psychosis, plus rarer presentations including eating disorders, adverse drug reactions, catatonias, capacity issues and complex relational matters. The service sees ~5-7 people who have harmed themselves daily, and has ~5-10 ward patients who are seen on more than one occasion who are on caseload. Commonly, about one patient is held at RCH under the mental health act at a time.

Main duties of the job

The role comprises face to face clinical contacts, direct clinical supervision to the junior medical staff, teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates, liaising with other clinical teams and services, and clinical leadership of the team.

The postholder will also be actively involved in the strategic development of the team and broader services and will be involved with the team manager and service manager in helping to steer the development of the service in line with the strategic direction of the organisation. The postholder will be actively involved in our planned integrated psychological medicine service which will see outpatients in our own clinics and in co-clinics with other services, as well as inpatients with a presence on other services’ MDTs.

Working for our organisation

Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CFT) is the principal provider of mental health, learning disability, children’s and adult community services to people living in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The Trust employs 3,700 people and with an annual budget in the region of £150 million is one of the largest local employers. The Trust was formed as a specialist provider in April 2002 following reorganisation of local NHS Trusts. It was licensed as a Foundation Trust in March 2010 and acquired community children’s services in April 2011. From April 2016 it also provides adult community services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The principal responsibility is to provide clinical leadership to the team in the assessment and management of patients with mental health presentations in RCH. The consultant will provide support particularly in the assessment of complex or high-risk cases. Each patient is allocated a consultant and a nurse who mainly oversee that patient’s care, but the team carries a single caseload, with no clinician carrying sole responsibility for any particular patient and all patients being discussed at every daily handover.
