Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust was rated good by the Care Quality Commission in its recent inspection report published in January 2020.

The Trust is committed to driving excellence in care for patients and communities, through its five-year strategy ‘Working Together’. In support of its strategy, in July 2020, the Trust became a university hospital, and will work to drive benefits for patients, colleagues and the local community by embedding research, education and training across the organisation.

The Trust’s main hub is the Queen Alexandra Hospital, which started life more than a century ago as a military hospital. Today it is one of the largest, modern hospitals on the south coast, with 1,200 beds housed in light, bright, infection resistant, en-suite wards. With a turnover of close to £600m, the Trust provides comprehensive secondary care and specialist services to a local population of 675,000 people across South East Hampshire. Some tertiary services are provided to a wider catchment in excess of two million people. The Trust employs over 7,300 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth.

In recruiting for our team, we welcome the unique contributions that you can bring in terms of your education, opinions, culture, ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity and expression, nation of origin, age, languages spoken, veteran’s status, colour, religion, disability, sexual orientation and beliefs.

Consultant Breast Surgeon

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated Surgeon, who is committed to excellence in Clinical Breast Surgery to join our dynamic team. This post is a new substantive position to help with the increasing breast cancer workload at Queen Alexandra Hospital. There is also an opportunity to deliver surgical services for skin cancer.

The Breast Unit carries out both screening and symptomatic assessments, treating about 700 cancers annually and is an ABS/BAPRAS nationally accredited Breast Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Training Centre. We also carry out a specialist skin cancer surgical service in collaboration with the plastic surgery team.

Participation in the on-call rota for General Surgery is not required but there is a rota for Breast Surgery on call.

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, based at Queen Alexandra Hospital has a vision to be recognised as a world-class hospital, leading the field through innovative healthcare solutions, focusing on the best outcomes for our patients, delivered in a safe, caring and inspiring environment. Portsmouth Cancer Centre also provides cancer services to West Sussex (Chichester) and the Isle of Wight. We are a friendly and integrated Centre and actively encourage research and innovation.

The area combines the advantages of city life with rural villages and seaside towns. Portsmouth is a thriving Naval City, steeped in history, on the beautiful South Coast. It is ninety minutes from central London and has good transport links by ferry and airplane into Europe. Water sports facilities are excellent with access to the Solent and sandy beaches are within easy reach. Inland is the spectacular and relatively unspoilt countryside of rural Hampshire, and the South Downs National Park. It is an excellent place to raise a family.
