About the role

Our well-regarded Large Corporate Underwriting function has a central role in defining, maintaining and implementing the company’s corporate risk selection, underwriting and management strategy. They determine appropriate rules, terms and features which enable the delivery of profit and growth objectives, develop technical capability and effectively manage insurance risk in line with the company’s risk appetite and in order to deliver first class customer service. As a department, they work closely with the Head Office Underwriting, Product, Performance and Pricing teams to achieve strategic objectives and liaise with many regional and central functions across the wider business.

A brand-new opportunity has arisen for a highly-experienced Commercial Property Underwriter to join the department as a Technical Lead. The role will entail managing the most complex and high value cases for corporate business and assuming responsibility for the performance and delivery of NFU Mutual’s property account.

As a Technical Specialist, you will be monitoring the delivery of technical activity, ensuring the right level of expertise within the team and your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the administration and resolution of complex, high value and contentious cases and referrals in accordance with internal policies and customer SLAs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and fair outcomes for members
  • Developing, coaching and mentoring Underwriters and sometimes Claims Handlers to ensure they have the required level of skills and knowledge to provide effective technical support and to deliver on their objectives including KPls and excellent customer service
  • Contributing to the planning and development of skills, resources and structures designed to deliver the required technical capability and customer service behaviours necessary to achieve continuity of service and fulfil individual potential
  • Auditing and monitoring the application of policies, procedures and processes, managing risks and issues, and investigating complaints and breaches in line with NFU Mutual’s standards and in compliance with regulatory requirements and the effective delivery of KPls
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with Team Leaders, Head Office departments, Agencies, Regional Service Centres, brokers, suppliers and peers to ensure the effective delivery and alignment of objectives
  • Identifying and supporting the development and implementation of improvements and changes to processes, procedures and practices to achieve consistent efficiency and customer service excellence
  • Analysing and reporting on performance, financial data and other MI to ensure quality of account performance and to identify need for rating action and changes in acceptance criteria and monitoring the implementation of any necessary modifications

What we’re looking for

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic Underwriting professional with extensive knowledge and experience with managing Commercial Property business accounts. You will have a proven track record of handling complex and high value matters with values upwards of £250k across a wide range of trade sectors.

You will have the ability to interpret complex data, drawing conclusions, producing underwriting portfolio analysis reports and delivering commercially sound recommendations in line with the company’s risk appetite and strategy.

As an expert within the team, you will be acting as a port of call for technical queries and will be supporting, training and developing the team to ensure they are equipped with all the tools, skills and knowledge they need to deliver excellent performance and outstanding customer service.

The role would be best suited to a strong communicator with the ability to manage stakeholder relationships at different levels and to effectively present complex information to non-technical audiences.
