About The Opportunity

ES&T Defence and Security (D&S) Operating Unit is looking for a highly motivated and experienced Commercial Manager to provide commercial support and drive commercial acumen into our teams. The D&S business includes work direct to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Tier1 Defence Contractors.

Significant growth is forecast both in the UK and Internationally.

The purpose of the Commercial Manager role is to provide commercial support and leadership across the entire D&S Operating Unit, maximise profitability and minimising commercial risk.

Specific duties will include
  • Commercial leadership across the OU including oversight of operational sales pricing, contracts and major changes on existing projects.
  • Ensuring that projects are delivered in accordance with the commercial terms and the best possible outcome is achieved for Jacobs both with respect to financial performance and client satisfaction.
  • Supporting the quarterly forecasting process and monthly reporting of the financial performance of the business
  • Influence and leadership to assure a right first-time culture and continuous improvement across the function.
  • Commercial risk management, identify potential major issues early, intervene and facilitate the mitigation/resolution of issues at the earliest possible time to avoid formal disputes.
  • Provide commercial training and support to D&S OU.
  • Lead and support business improvement initiatives.

Working Relationship

Internal
  • Reports to the Group Director Business Operations
  • Functional interface with the Head of Profession to ensure consistency of approach, application of good practise and appropriate recruitment, career development and progression arrangements are implemented.
  • Direct interface with the Head of Project Controls, Legal Team and Finance Business Partner.
  • Collaboration with the Group and Project Directors to provide commercial support and deliver successful projects.
  • Collaboration with Sales to support the growth of the business.
  • Collaboration with broader operational leadership across the company to deliver corporate objectives.
External
  • Interfacing where necessary with; clients, partners, competitors, and regulators.
Level of Influence & Decision-Making Authority
  • Responsible for assuring appropriate Commercial systems, processes and procedures are in place.
  • Making interventions where project commercial delivery performance is found to be lacking.

Qualifications Relevant Degree or equivalent experience and ideally professionally qualified.

Knowledge, Skills And Experience
  • Minimum 10-15 years’ experience in the Commercial Management of Projects in a highly regulated environment including
    • Full project life-cycle involvement (Bidding thorough to Final Account).
    • NEC based contracts.
    • Strong pricing and commercial modelling skills.
    • In depth experience with Contracts and range of terms and conditions.
    • Setting strategy and leading on major commercial negotiations and dispute resolution.
    • Joint Venture type delivery models.
    • International experience in Europe and/or Middle East desirable
    • UK National and ability to obtain SC Clearance.

    • Proactive, with a drive for delivery and an ability to bring stakeholders together around a common vision and deliver it.
    • An ability to create an open and trusting environment and high performing teams through a willingness to actively listen, share strengths, admit vulnerability, surface differences, and speak out when in disagreement.
    • Able to connect people and issues and drive a quick response. Responsiveness is key in this role.
    • Confidence to Intervene and to drive continuous improvement.
    • Influences and stays up to date with legislative and best practice developments in the industry to ensure we are seen as a leader in our field.
