The clinical fellowship in Head and Neck is a one-year fellowship programme, allowing the fellow to gain experience in advance radiotherapy, including IGRT, VMAT, MR Linac and Proton Beam therapy in Head and Neck and non-melanoma skin tumours. The fellowship is a clinical post.Overseas applications are welcome however applicants must already have GMC registration and right to work in the UK agreed.
Suitable trainees would have completed or about to complete their FRCR examinations (or equivalent) and are senior specialty trainees in Clinical Oncology.
Fellows will have opportunities to participate in recruiting patients into clinical trials including those with Proton Beam Therapy. In addition, there are potential management and leadership skill development opportunities during the fellowship.
The H&N team comprises of 4 Clinical Oncology consultants and 1 Medical Oncologist specialising in Head and Neck cancer. We work collaboratively with our medical oncology and academic colleagues and have a strong commitment to teaching, quality improvement and research. It is expected that this post holder will work alongside doctors and junior medical staff and actively engage in clinical audit and the recruitment of patients to studies in our wide trial portfolio.
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior trainee input into the Head and
Neck team and oligometastasis SABR team. This will mainly be daytime working hours. There are no
on call commitments, but the fellow is welcome to take part in vacant shifts that are additionally
paid as locum (participation in this is voluntary).
