As a regional Building Society, the Monmouthshire Building Society has a great affiliation with the communities in which we operate and actively endeavour to support them wherever possible.

In the year 2000, the Society extended its commitment by launching its own Charitable Foundation. Since its launch, the Foundation has contributed over £300,000 to more than 500 local organisations and charities across Southeast Wales.

The Foundation is independent of The Society, and its policies and decisions are determined by a Board of Trustees. The Trustees give up their own time running the Charitable Foundation and are not paid for the work they do.

Trustees play a vital role as board members, ensuring our organisation has solid plans in progress to achieve our aims and that our funding is being used appropriately to do this.

The Foundation is seeking additional members of the public to join our Board of Trustees, which oversees our charity’s work. Each Trustee brings their own unique perspective to the table, to inform key decisions that shape the future of the Foundation.

The Foundation are particularly keen to ensure that our trustee board reflects the diverse nature of the communities we support. We encourage applications from everyone regardless of age, disability, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.

Role of the Trustee

The Foundation’s Board of Trustees is the highest-level governance and decision-making authority within the charity. Trustees ensure that there is a clear strategy, and that the charity’s work and goals are in line with their vision. The trustees’ role is to be ‘guardians of purpose’, making sure that all decisions put the needs of the mission and beneficiaries first. Trustees also safeguard assets - both physical assets, including property, and intangible ones, such as the charity’s reputation. They make sure these are used well and that the charity is run sustainably.

Time Commitment

The Board of Trustees meets once per quarter and attendance (in normal circumstances) can be in person at the Monmouthshire Building Society Head Office in Newport or remotely via teleconferencing. As a guide, Trustees are expected to commit approximately 2 hours a month reviewing funding requests and be required to attend a Trustees meeting for 2 hours each quarter. In addition the Trustees may on occasion be asked to attend one of the charity events the foundation has supported, although this is ad hoc in nature.

Tenure

The initial term for all appointed Trustees is a period of five years.

Remuneration

Like most not-for-profit Board roles this position is unremunerated, however, reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred fulfilling the duties of the role will be reimbursed (e.g travelling expenses).
