Ceramics and 3D Technician Demonstrator

Position: Full-time permanent role

Location: Newcastle under Lyme College

In November 2019 Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) became the first further education provider in England to achieve outstanding grades in every area of Ofsted’s recently reformed Education Inspection Framework (EIF).

The group is currently home to a population of over 5,000 full-time students and around 500 students on higher education programmes. We have over 4,000 part-time or adult learners and 2,000 apprentices where we work with over 800 individual employers.

We are looking for a Ceramics and 3D Technician Demonstrator to join our Arts department to maintain and prepare Ceramics and 3D for use and developing the enrichment within the College. To be responsible for delivering outstanding demonstrations that use innovative and dynamic methods to secure learner success.

The post holder will undertake such duties as required of a Technician Demonstrator in relation to the full range of processes and techniques associated with this role, primarily in the Ceramics and 3D areas, which includes being responsible for the stock control and ordering of tools, materials and equipment. To assist in preparation of workshops for 3D and Ceramics classes, liaising with staff teams. To also plan and deliver lively and interactive instruction and assessment activities to a high standard on a range of programmes.

To be successful you will need to be qualified to at least A Level (Level 3) or equivalent and preferably studied up to graduate level in Ceramics or 3D. Have a good basic level of education including literacy and numeracy to GCSE or equivalent, with the ability to adopt positive working relationships and to stimulate a passion for your subject area amongst students. Be able to demonstrate that you are a team player who is able to work effectively as part of a team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake such duties as required of a Ceramics and 3D Technician Demonstrator in relation to the full range of processes and techniques associated with this role in the Ceramics area which includes being responsible for the stock control and ordering of tools, materials and equipment
  • To prepare clay and glazes for glazing work in sufficient quantities. To load/unload and fire kilns
  • Give the required support when required relating to both full and part time provision (which could be in the work place) including: initial assessment, employer engagement, health and safety vetting and to support progress reviews.
  • Plan and deliver lively and interactive instruction and assessment activities to a high standard on a range of programmes. Although these activities would ordinarily be carried out in a workshop/laboratory environment, there could be some associated classroom activities.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Is qualified to at least A Level (Level 3) or equivalent and preferably has studied up to graduate level in Art and Design.
  • Has gained experience in a creative 3D background and ideally has an interest in or experience of Ceramic Art
  • Holds English & Maths GCSE or equivalent
  • Is an outstanding communicator with an ability to stimulate a passion for your subject area amongst students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
