Main Purpose of JobThe following information provides an overview of the skills, qualities, and qualifications needed for this role.The International Barley Hub (IBH), part of the James Hutton Institute, funded as part of the £300m Tay Cities Deal (TCD) development programme, seeks to secure the long-term future of the barley sector by helping develop superior new varieties and growing systems that are resilient to future climate change as well as developing novel new uses for the crop. The IBH is underpinned by decades of research at the James Hutton Institute as well as commercial input from stakeholders including the Scotch Whisky Association, the Maltsters Association of GB and the National Farmers Union Scotland. The IBH will bring together world-leading science to focus on solutions for the whole barley supply chain, not only in Scotland and the UK, but globally. To support our ambitious targets for this project, the post holder will, with close working with the Director of the International Barley Hub, identify and negotiate profitable contracts, and other sources of commercial income, from both the private and public sector, nationally and internationally. They will assist the Director of the IBH develop and deliver the IBH Business Plan, Annual Operational Plan, Risk Register and budget to support the delivery of the vision, mission and objectives of the IBH.Main Duties of PostholderLead business development and obtain funding to support development and growth of the IBH:Deliver the strategic plan developed in collaboration with IP Pragmatics, for exploitation, industrial linkage and commercialisation of IBH activities through business development, licencing, spin outs and other routes (e.g. attracting related companies to co-locate with IBH).Provide an interface between industry and IBH research and innovation, with a focus on maximising commercial revenues and impact.Working with the JHI Research Director develop and implement a strategy for how the IBH can assist International Development and win funding to deliver impact.Develop a stakeholder engagement plan, marketing, communications and influencing strategy.Establish and manage strong working relationships with key stakeholders in the barley supply chain, including the development of an Industry Communications Plan, and evaluate creative ways for how businesses and research partners can associate with the IBH.Work with key stakeholders in the supply chain to identify emerging sectoral need including skills requirements and work with the Science Director to establish collaborative research and skills development programmesWork with other Business Development Managers in JHL to improve efficiencies and identify opportunities for cross-selling as well as with the JHL Marketing Manager and JHI Communications Team.Key TargetsDelivery of the key targets outlined in the TCD IBH approved business caseEstablish a series of significant industry funded collaborative research programmes aligned with the IBH strategic research planAttract fully funded commercial services as outlined in the IBH business planIdentify opportunities to licence IBH intellectual property.Working with the Science Program staff and Institute Communications team, enable delivery of local National/International workshops, conferences and eventsSupport the malting, brewing and distilling sectors to secure public sector grants in collaboration with the IBH.Support the creation of spin outs /start-up businesses from the IBHAttract business and research partners to co-locate with the IBHPerson SpecificationEssentialEducation/Experience/SkillsExperience of working in a commercial / business development roleEducated to degree level in a relevant academic discipline or equivalent business experienceExperience and knowledge of the national and international barley sector and related industriesExperience and knowledge of crop science, and national and international research and development landscapeExperience working with stakeholders at a strategic level, building networks and strategic marketing and communicationsStrong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skillsDesirableExtensive international networks within the barley and/or related processing sectorsBusiness qualification or trainingExperience and demonstrable ability in contemporary communication methods including social mediaKnowledge of intellectual property rights, especially plant variety rightsAdditional Notes/RequirementsDriving licenceWillingness to travel internationallyBenefits offeredEmployee Assistance Programme (EAP) - A confidential service available to support employees and their families with work or personal problems.
