Higher Healthcare Technical Officer

Job Summary

Innovative cellular and molecular therapies are starting to transform the way we treat cancer and other life-threatening conditions. Through our network of state-of-the-art facilities, we are at the forefront of developing and manufacturing these new therapies for early phase clinical trials. The delivery of these new therapies into the NHS builds on our extensive expertise supporting more established stem cell transplantation therapies for malignant and inherited haematological disorders.

Working within a dedicated team you will support the development and manufacture of life-saving cell and gene therapies. To start with, we will provide you with an extensive induction and training programme.
You’ll provide vital support to qualified scientific staff as they undertake specialised work in our MHRA and HTA regulated laboratories. Specifically, that means preparing samples for testing or storage, performing stock management, carrying out basic maintenance on equipment and working regularly in a clean room environment.
We’re looking for a BTEC/HNC in a Science or other relevant subject, or the NHSBT foundation degree or equivalent. You’ll also, ideally, have a working knowledge of basic IT packages and some experience of working unsupervised in a laboratory environment. Flexible in your approach and a good team player, you must be able to keep clear, accurate records.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be required to perform a range of routine and non routine tasks associated with the manufacture and issue of cell therapy products, with the support of your supervisor and other team members
  • You will be responsible for data entry into Laboratory management systems
  • You will be responsible for stock management and reporting
  • You will be required to handle stem cell bags, cellular samples and a range of equipment
  • You will be required to work in a clean room, following appropriate training, both unsupervised and while acting as support staff
  • You will be required to manually handle equipment on a daily basis weighing up to 13 kgs, with or without mechanical aids, with appropriate training
  • You will be working with very low temperatures for sample storage
