Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a senior Phystiotherapist to work within the Older Person Assessment and Liaison team (OPAL) at UHB.

As part of a multidisciplinary team OPAL provides timely patient centred assessments to those with acute needs within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. We provide effective and efficient multidisciplinary comprehensive geriatric assessment within ED and the Acute Medical Unit.

Our aim is to reduce avoidable admissions by proactively assessing patients and addressing issues relating to function, mobility and social needs referring on to community services as required. This holistic service means patients receive the support and treatment needed, in the most appropriate setting for them, which will often be their own home supported by community teams.

You will be adopting a home first approach using client centred assessments, using your leadership, expertise and advice to support the patients through their journey.

You will also support the new and successful OPAL+ initiative which provides an out of hospital consult service over the phone to, paramedics, Advance Nurse Practitioners and the Urgent Care Response teams in Birmingham and Solihull.

The role requires excellent communication skills the ability to discuss highly sensitive matters with patients and relatives. You will also be able to confidently refer patients for onward support in the community and provided sign posting information.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

As part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT), OPAL provides timely patient centred assessments to those with acute needs within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. You will provide effective and efficient multidisciplinary comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) within the Emergency department and the Acute Medical Unit.

We would expect applicants to have excellent communication skills, a flexible approach and the ability to work autonomously. Excellent organisational and time management skills are essential.

You will have excellent prioritisation skills and demonstrate client centred practice. You should provide evidence of relevant courses and training as well as commitment to ongoing CPD.

You should have relevant clinical experience specific to the post, and you will need to have experience of working within the acute NHS as well as working within a multi-disciplinary team.

The successful candidate will be required to supervise staff as well as support undergraduate students within their clinical placements.

BSc Degree in Physiotherapy or

equivalent

  • HCPC registration

Experience

Essential

Specialist knowledge in the field of

frailty syndromes & interventions for

older people

  • Experience of working at band 5 level

or above within the NHS

  • Good understanding of working in an

acute trust

  • Experience in the supervision and

management of junior staff

  • Evidence of and desire to supervise

students

  • Understanding of current legislation

and application to physiotherapy
