This is an opportunity for an Automation Project Engineer to join the established onsite team at GSK Barnard Castle. This team delivers all on site manufacturing equipment, covering everything from building management systems, SCADA systems, steriliser systems, filling machines, labelling, assembly robots, packaging and more, and as such it is a multi-functional group which requires engineers with expertise in Automation and Control systems to contribute to these equipment projects.

As an Automation Engineer you will play a key role in the selection, specification and installation of new, highly automated equipment. You will work closely with site-based stakeholders to agree the purpose of the project and the necessary requirements. You will contribute to supplier selection and auditing, the set-up, integration and development of the control system, the design and development of the machines, the factory and site acceptance tests, validation and some high-level care of the equipment throughout its lifecycle. As well as a necessary partnership with production and maintenance, you will need to work closely with IT to ensure the network security of any integrated systems.

This role will provide a vast learning experience across an eclectic range of equipment, while working in a team of seasoned engineers. As such, we are open to considering people who would view this as a progression and developmental opportunity for themselves including new graduates or people who have qualified and switched specialism to automation and controls more recently.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that equipment and project specifications issued are adequate to convey control requirements
  • Monitoring design, development and installation work; ensuring compliance with GSK requirements and procedures
  • Reviewing suppliers and reporting on their suitability to execute work for the company
  • Ensuring that suppliers provide adequate definition of their Control & Instrumentation systems and review them against requirements specifications
  • Continuing integration and expansion of the OT Site Automation LAN, interfacing with the GSK IT network as required
  • Ensuring systems are delivered which comply with GSK’s requirements on ‘Data Integrity’
  • Ensuring that control systems for projects and new equipment, which have GMP significance, are validated in accordance with company requirements, policies and procedures
  • Preparation and completion validation protocols and reports
  • Ensuring smooth handover of systems into production
  • Managing in house and contract technical resource assigned to projects
  • Providing technical controls expertise to resolve complex problems within the Business Units

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Degree or similar level qualification in a relevant subject (Automation, Controls, Electrical Engineering etc.)
  • Hands on practical experience in the use of PLC based automation technologies
  • Experience of IT systems in an automation context
  • Experience with MS Office Software

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • PLC systems (Ideally Siemens S7/PCS7)
  • BMS systems (TREND)
  • A high-level computer programming language
  • Principles of Automation Equipment, Computer validation, cGMPs and regulatory requirements
  • Project planning, project management
  • Database Technology and it’s use within Automation Systems
  • Control of Pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment and processes
  • Automation IT based networks including Ethernet / TCPIP and associated Cyber Security
  • International Engineering standards
