Associate Principal Scientist – Molecular Biologist/Protein Scientist

What you’ll do

We are looking for an Associate Principal Scientist to join our Antibody Discovery and Protein Engineering (ADPE) team based in Granta Park, Cambridge UK. ADPE is responsible for the discovery and optimisation of biological candidate drugs across all AZ therapy areas such as oncology, respiratory and inflammation, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases. We are constantly pushing the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients, with a passion for the development of in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to address unmet medical needs.

We are looking for someone who is recognised as an expert in the field of molecular biology and protein biochemistry to the delivery of our next-generation oncology biotherapeutics portfolio. In this role you will lead experiment strategies to deliver project milestones and technology advancements.

  • Leads experimental strategies in the technical areas of molecular biology, protein biochemistry and cell biology to provide decision-making data for therapeutic biologics drugs projects
  • Maintains and applies extensive expertise in molecular biology (e.g., high-throughput cloning), protein/antibody engineering, and protein expression and purification to facilitate development of next generation biologics
  • Makes detailed observations, analyses data, interprets results and devises solutions to complex scientific problems
  • Responsible for driving strategic alignment for the development of next-generation immune-oncology biologics – in particular their production and characterisation
  • Makes decisions on project direction based on their own findings, the findings of others, and factors from outside the company
  • Provides general supervision and mentorship to other scientists and associates through matrix management
  • Recognised as a specialist in their area of expertise. Establishes internal and external contacts and collaborations within scientific field of value to the business and presents at internal (intra- and inter-departmental) and external meetings
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication by establishing good working relationships with team and department members and others within the company

Essential Criteria

  • PhD with proven experience or BSc/higher degree with extensive lab-based experience
  • A deep level of knowledge and strong technical skills in molecular biology (e.g., next-generation cloning techniques), protein biochemistry and engineering, and cell biology
  • Extensive experience in leading and troubleshooting biologics development strategies
  • A history of successful project delivery and publications and/or patents
  • Excellent communication, capable of developing good working relationships with individuals across organisational boundaries and experience working within a team environment

Desirable Criteria

  • Background in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience that includes developing next-generation biologics, e.g. multi-specific molecules, to support immune-oncology biologics research
  • Experience with automation platforms, e.g. Hamilton Star
