As the Assistant Programming Editor, you will be joining a new team responsible for producing a digital experience from The New York Times that is built around audio journalism. This deadline-driven team will create a vibrant destination that is home to the best audio journalism each day. Our aim will be to provide an indispensable answer to the question: what should I listen to now?

The role will involve executing an editorial vision in a daily digital experience to provide news energy, urgency, relevancy, and surprise. You will be part of a small creative team developing and implementing an editorial agenda that is special and distinct, thoughtful and broad, and that draws listeners to us in the competitive digital audio landscape. In particular, we envision that this role will also focus on closely monitoring the latest breaking news and big stories of the day to constantly ensure our offerings meet the moment and strike the right tone upon publishing.

The team will draw from Times audio journalism — reactively from the newsroom, from the magazine, Opinion and The Daily — as well as from Audm, Serial, This American Life, and other publishers. You will contribute to of-the-moment discussions around news and culture, and serve as the listener’s representative. You will need strong news judgment, an ability to concisely and compellingly frame stories, technical acumen, and an ability to incorporate audience data into decision making. The role will report directly to the Editor for Audio Programming.

You’ll answer questions like: How do we balance news urgency with serendipity? How do we surface evergreen stories from our archive? How do we leverage the best of our journalism in breaking news situations?

You must have a keen understanding of the news, but also a desire to challenge the conventional ways of telling it. The ideal candidate will combine sound editorial judgment with passion for audio journalism and The Times, and a desire to innovate in the field. You will have a track record in digital publishing as well as outstanding writing and editing skills for text-based media. Audio production skills and a passion for audio storytelling, and an ability to be a creative partner to journalists or programme makers on deadline, will be an advantage.

This position will be based in London starting at 4:30 am EST.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Executing the plan for a daily digital experience

  • Ability to handle multiple deadlines at once, including monitoring breaking news

  • Proven track record of work involving photo or other visual editors

  • Sound news judgment

  • Strong writing and framing skills: reading closely for grammar, typos etc

  • Knowledge of and facility to learn digital tools and programs, including content management systems

  • Partnering dynamically with managers to build and prepare content

  • Bonus: Audio editing skills

Requirements:

  • 4 years working as a digital editor

  • Ability to handle multiple deadlines at once

  • Ability to work quickly under deadline

  • Sound news judgment

  • Strong writing and framing skills

  • Technical acumen

  • Organizational skills and familiarity with audience thinking
