About The Role
As Assistant Editor, The Telegraph (Features and Lifestyle) you will:
  • Be responsible for all features and lifestyle output across telegraph.co.uk, the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, reporting into the Editor and Director of Content
  • Lead areas including daily features and news analysis content, the culture, fashion and lifestyle sections, travel and the Telegraph Magazine
  • Help lead the continued digital transformation of The Telegraph ensuring that your department thinks and acts digital first and that content supports The Telegraph’s subscriber strategy
  • Build a high-performing team that has smart ideas and executes them brilliantly. Identify, attract and develop the best writing talent for The Telegraph
Key Responsibilities
  • All editorial output in the Features and Lifestyle sections of The Telegraph, digitally and in print
  • Leading the department and representing at appropriate daily and weekly conferences
  • Ensuring that The Telegraph’s features output serves the wants and needs of our subscribers and attracts more subscribers
  • Identifying, recruiting and promoting the best commissioners, writers and publishers
  • People management - ensuring that the department is managed effectively and that we make the best of the talent that we have
  • Ensure that the department has the appropriate meetings, systems and structures to run efficiently and deliver the best journalism to our readers
  • Financial responsibility for the department, hitting budgets and maximising the return on the budget
  • Innovation - ensuring that we develop new content themes and types of subjects that broaden the appeal of the Telegraph
  • Contributing to the broader Telegraph outside the Features and Lifestyle department in terms of ideas, processes and strategic initiatives
Key Skills
  • Proven experience as a senior executive in journalism - running substantial departments in fast-moving news or features environment
  • Strong track record of striking ideas, producing compelling output that demonstrably builds audiences
  • Command of the news agenda and natural understanding of the subjects and stories that will drive subscriber engagement
  • Track record in delivering best in class reported or analytical features
  • A broad frame of reference and interests. Ability to identify good subjects for features from a wide range of subjects that are of interest to our readers
  • High-quality publishing skills in digital and print. Understanding of how to maximise the impact of our journalism through how it is presented, how it is headlined and how it is sold on our platforms and third-party platforms
  • Proven track record in digital publishing. An understanding of analytics and how to use them to improve the department’s output
  • A proven identifier and developer of talent, you should have a list of people you would want to attract or develop and a plan of how you would do so
  • Strong organisational skills to ensure that a large and complex department runs efficiently and with open and clear communication
  • Highly developed people management skills. Ability to get the best out of people through setting clear expectations and helping people achieve their objectives
  • Proven ability to manage substantial budgets
