Architecture, Art, and Culture Instructor (Summer)
  • Explorations at the University of Oxford, and University College London, United Kingdom
  • June 29-July 13
  • www.explo.org
The Opportunity
Our UK Explorations are 2-week experiential programs for high school students designed to live at the intersection of academics, industry, and culture. Our Explorations allow young people from around the world the opportunity to explore two incredible cities, immersed in both academic study and cultural discovery. Students and staff will spend one week on the beautiful Worcester College campus at the University of Oxford, and one week at University College London, engaging both in the classroom and amid all that both cities have to offer.

Our Architecture, Art, and Culture course is designed to really immerse students in the incredible settings of both Oxford and London, helping to expand how they see the world — and the possibilities for future shared spaces. How have the values of various cultures impacted art and architecture? How are technological advances changing the way we design and build? How is architecture responding to ecological issues? The course will challenge students to explore their surroundings through a new set of lenses, while trying their hand at digital design, photography, and curation while considering the historical, political, and cultural forces that help to shape the world around them.

Instructor Responsibilities
  • Review a planned course outline and work closely with our year-round team to customize it based on your areas of interest and research
  • Teach approximately 5 instructional hours per weekday, in addition to all necessary class preparation
  • Chaperone off-campus academic trips with your class, including on some evenings, in order to integrate the experience with curricular content
  • Write end-of-summer course evaluation reports for each student, in consultation with, and with the assistance of, EXPLO year-round staff
  • Travel with the group between Oxford and London, and assist, as needed, with associated supervision and other logistics
  • Attend all-community events such as a formal dinner at Oxford
Applicant Requirements
  • An interest in teaching in a hands-on and interactive environment
  • Professional or academic experience in the field; ideally, you will also hold a graduate degree in a related field.
  • Availability to work on campus for the duration of the program
Dates, Compensation, and Training
  • The course will run from July 1 - July 12, 2024, with students arriving at Oxford on June 30 and departing July 13.
  • Dates for pre-season, remote training (primarily the review of lesson plans and course content) will be discussed as part of any job offer. On-campus, in-person training will take place on Saturday, June 29.
  • Compensation: $3,000 to $4,000, based on relevant training and experience; room and board are provided for the duration of the program, as is round-trip airfare to/from the UK.
