We are delighted to offer the opportunity for an Apprentice Scenic Engineer to join our highly experienced and friendly Scenic Engineering team at the Royal Shakespeare Company. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking to be active member of the Scenic Engineering department in one of the most well-known theatre companies in the world.

An RSC Apprenticeship provides an alternative and supportive way of accessing a career in theatre. This scheme will focus on the development of construction skills through a mix of work-based learning and coursework, allowing you to develop your practical ability and recognise your potential. As part of this 42-month apprentice programme you will work towards the successful completion of a Level 3 Engineering apprenticeship. This will enable you to gain a wide range of skills and techniques used in scenic engineering.

What will I be doing?

As an Apprentice Scenic Engineer, you will be involved in all aspects of the Scenic Engineering department and under the supervision of a Senior Engineer you will learn about the preparation, construction and finishing of scenery, how to carry out the pre-assembly and on-site installation of scenery and the Health and Safety standards required when constructing scenery. So, if you have an interest in scenic engineering, then this is for you.

Criteria for this role includes:

  • You must be able to meet specific entry requirements of the apprenticeship and we will prioritise applicants eligible to government funding for their apprenticeship and for this the following will be required:
  • You must have lived in the UK or in the European Economic Area (EEA) for the last 3 years
  • Be a resident of the UK for the entire duration of the programme
  • If you already have a degree in the same field or a related one, you will not be eligible to this apprenticeship.
  • Not be registered to study on a UK government funded course ending August 2023 or later
  • You will be required to undertake studying and assessments required to complete the apprenticeship. This may involve an end point assessment.
  • You must have a commitment to incorporated qualifications for example, Maths and English functional skills if you don’t already have them or of equivalence.
  • You must have the commitment to work flexibly as part of the team

This is a full time, fixed term contract for the duration of the 42-month apprenticeship. Working hours will be 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8am and 6pm (scheduled in advance). There may be some evening and weekend work on occasion.

This role is part of the Scenic Engineering Workshop and is based at the Timothy’s Bridge Road site in Stratford-upon-Avon, although some travel to other sites and venues may be required as appropriate.

The closing date for applications is midnight on Friday 5 January 2024. There will be an in-person Assessment Centre on Tuesday 23 January 2024 at the Timothy’s Bridge Road Workshops, in Stratford-upon-Avon.
