The apprenticeship will be a combination of learning on the job, guided by our highly experienced technical team, together with off the job training/study with our training provider City College. Successful completion of the apprenticeship you will become a qualified Laboratory Technician and will have a permanent position at the University.

To plan and oversee the provision of specialist technical support for defined research or consultancy projects, interpreting and meeting the requirements of the customer, and deploying defined resources to ensure operational and cost-efficiency.

To carry out a range of tests, analysing and evaluating the results using specified methodologies, and contributing to the interpretation of results, the development of techniques and the choice of models and approaches.

To ensure accurate completion of all documentation, reports and records.

To ensure equipment in the work environment is maintained in accordance with technical and health and safety procedures, diagnosing faults and repairing apparatus as necessary.

To ensure compliance with health and safety processes within the working environment including acting as Area Safety Office for defined laboratories and facilities as appropriate.

To train students, junior colleagues and new researchers in techniques and the safe and effective use of equipment, and communicating and liaising with all internal and external users of technical service.

Any other duties as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post holder.

  • testing and maintenance of equipment, including electrical safety testing
  • Monitoring and advising on stock requirements of equipment and goods
  • Carrying out a range of defined tests/experiments/technical procedures, using specialist equipment and techniques
  • Accurate and effective record keeping
  • Providing guidance to students in relation to technical operations, machinery and testing undertaken

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • 5 GCSE at grades A* to C/9 to 4 including English language, maths, ICT and science subject (Predicted grades or equivalent qualifications)
  • Ability to operate and maintain relevant basic equipment
  • Ability to make effective use of standard and specialist computer systems including word-processing and spreadsheets

Future prospects

  • You will have regular reviews with your Line Manager and this will be discussed as you progress

Things to consider

  • Attend training in the use of equipment and the procedures required to ensure the safe and efficient running of the Faculties facilities as required
  • Attend training courses at an approved supplier of skills training for further education
  • Taking instructions from management and the client (students, researchers, academics and enterprise staff) to manufacture components and complete projects. This will involve using specialised knowledge and experience to answer queries, read and interpret engineering drawings and providing demonstrations in the correct use of equipment
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment in accordance with Health and Safety procedures, within an engineering workshop
  • Physically fit as this role requires some moving and manual handling
