Not only will you receive fully funded qualifications you will get real-world, hands-on experience of working in an aerospace engineering environment.
As an Apprentice Aerospace Engineer, you will be expected to develop the high level of skill and knowledge required to carry out maintenance, repairs and modifications to a variety of aircraft, safely, on time and within budget. You will then use this knowledge to move into the Engineering and design teams with the potential of completing further qualifications. After your initial apprenticeship this will become an office based role.
Duties of an Apprentice Aerospace Engineer:
  • Attend and engage with training, including exams and 1-2-1 meetings with your tutors/assessors
  • Manage your time effectively to complete all coursework, assignments and exams required to achieve the apprenticeship
  • Reflect on your own practice and experiences and take any feedback onboard
  • Scheduled aircraft maintenance and servicing
  • Unscheduled aircraft maintenance including defect rectification to aircraft systems and components
  • Repairs to airframe structures
  • All levels of modifications to aircraft structures, systems and interiors
  • Related duties, including operation of ground equipment, assistance in aircraft movements and aircraft delivery
  • Liaise with the shop floor to assess damage and how practical repair schemes can be designed
  • Use specification data to design repairs including material selection, stress calculations and inspection requirements
  • Design modifications for airframe or avionic systems
  • Use several computer-based design tools and prototyping
  • Work within a project team to transfer requirements into deliverable products.
The Apprenticeship
Your apprenticeship will be delivered by our very own Marshall Skills Academy. As an Apprentice - Aerospace Engineer working in our Aerospace business you will start by following the Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard. More information on this standard can be found on the institute for apprenticeships website. You will gain the following qualifications during your first 3 years:
  • Level 2 Diploma in Aerospace & Aviation Engineering
  • Level 3 Diploma in Aviation Maintenance (technical knowledge qualification)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance (competence qualification)
You will work towards developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required through a range of workshop training, classroom sessions and on the job learning. Not only will you develop your technical skills you will also have the opportunity to develop the behaviours needed to set the foundation for your future career. You will be supported every step of the way by our instructors, mentors, line managers and fellow apprentices.
Following the initial training and qualifications you will have completed our apprentice aircraft fitter programme. You will then move off of the shop floor into the engineering and design teams. There will be potential to do higher level qualifications and gain training on CAD and other software.

Entry requirements
  • You must have at least 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C/4-9 (or equivalent) including Mathematics, English Language and Science
  • You must not have already completed the level 2 and 3 qualifications listed above in the apprenticeship section
  • In order to receive apprenticeship funding you must have the right to work in the UK and meet residency eligibility requirements
  • You must successfully pass all required medical and security checks if you are offered a place on the apprenticeship programme

Please note that assessment centres for this role will be held between February and March. If successful in getting through to this stage you will need to attend half a day in person at our Marshall Skills Academy in Cambridge. Please note that our offices are closed between the 25th December and 2nd January so we will get back to you about applications submitted before or during this time from the 9th January 2023 onwards.

Access to US technical data by employees requires prior Trade Control function approval. Clearance must be carried out against all applicable US export control authorisations.
