  • The Northern Faculty of Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) conducts a wide range of research in applied agriculture, including soil and crop science, animal health and production, and aquaculture. Researchers have access to a variety of data sets, the scope of which is unique in Scotland and rare in the UK.
SRUC’s Inverness-based Epidemiology and Planetary Heath (EPH) Group play a critical role in quantitative and data-based research efforts within Scottish Government’s Centre of Expertise on Animal Disease Outbreaks (EPIC) and other areas of domestic and wild animal health. The team is located in the Rural and Veterinary Innovation Centre (RaVIC) an element of which supports the development of rural businesses and by providing advice on data curation and data analyses.

We are seeking a Senior Applied Data Scientist to join EPIC, to support the EPH and RaVIC and to participate more broadly in SRUC’s data-driven research programmes in animal health, epidemiology, and agriculture.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, independent scientist with a proven track record in health, epidemiology or related fields. You will have experience and/or training in modern data science techniques as well as data wrangling and database engineering. Experience of disease modelling would be advantageous. Familiarity with information systems security and regulations pertaining to data protection. Teaching opportunities may exist.

In This Role You Will
  • lead in developing research programmes around data science, contribute to successful grant applications and contribute to research papers focussed on epidemiology and disease control
  • design and develop appropriate solutions for the storage, mining or extraction of data from ongoing research projects, animal health surveillance systems, and long-term agricultural experiments, and devise approaches to integrate data from a variety of sources
  • develop a system for the implementation of Open Data approaches within EPIC
collaborate with other researchers on the suitability of different approaches using modern data science for a wide variety of research and commercially orientated projects
  • integrate newly developed approaches for data processing into an existing system for automated data handling to facilitate the development of prediction models and machine learning algorithms
  • assist in the automation of updating data sources and data handling applications
provide periodic assistance to other data management and research staff as needed
  • provide data support, including training, for businesses engaged with RaVIC as agreed and considered appropriate
  • present project results using a range of media including the provision of teaching elements at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
Salary on appointment will be based on experience and qualifications.
