Application Engineer, Synthetic Ropes

Bridon-Bekaert The Ropes Group (BBRG) are looking for an Applications Engineer to join our Synthetics team in Coatbridge (Scotland).

The purpose is to support Synthetic Rope Product Development and Commercial Projects by assisting business partners/customers on the installation, use, troubleshoot and, inspection of synthetic ropes, in field or laboratory scenarios. Developing expertise in existing and new applications by interacting and getting involved with customers and partners.

The accountabilities include but are not limited to:

• Provide expertise support to commercial segment teams, sales, and technology teams
• Acting as the bridge between the customer and the BBRG Technical team
• Active participation in the ongoing development and action of the BBRG synthetics vision, representing the customers’ prospective with regard to future product development.
• Assist the Technical team members on resolution of technical issues for customers, both post-project and outside of projects/non-projects.
• Provide projects team with specialist technical support.
• Advising clients and BBRG project leaders on all matters concerning technical deployment and installation.
• Represent technical aspects of project at project kick-off meetings.
• Takes responsibility for technical project reporting e.g in conjunction with the technical team, manage the resolution of technical aspects of customer complaints.
• Act as the “go-to” person within the team for clients when they have a technical query, liaise with technical department members as appropriate.
• Hands-on on customer field support.
• Be BBRG Synthetics “Qualified Person”, carrying out inspections on in use rope, during installation and production
• Set-up and Maintenance of rope inspection reports.
• Help creation product manuals for the full product life-cycle
• Significant global travel is expected (up to 35% of time expected)

The ideal candidate will have:
Knowledge
Essential

• Engineering or material science knowledge
• Textiles Synthetic Fibre Materials, coatings, extrusion
• Project management methodologies with proven experience of delivery
• Launch of new products into a manufacturing operation
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or similar technical field / equivalent experience
• Strong knowledge in rope & rope applications, preferably synthetic fibre ropes.

Desirable:

• Knowledge of product qualification with external bodies (ABS/DNV/Lloyds/BV)
• Practical Knowledge of Textiles, Ropes, cables, pipes
• Lifting equipment, Marine and crane applications in offshore construction or mooring system design or installation
• Writing and managing European and other funding project briefs (H2020/Scottish Enterprise/Innovate UK etc.)

Skills

• Experience of engineering or design function in a Customer facing role
• Ability to convert new product requirements into a product design specification with a clear methodology for validation and commercialization.
• Educated to degree level in Engineering or Material Science
• Good IT skills, including MS Office; MS Project; Visio; Mindmap.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, including technical report writing skills and experience of delivering presentations.

Experience

• A strong research or design interest with experience in engineering or materials science in a product design or development environment.
• Analytical approach to Design for application requirements
