Agricultural Meteorologist, Slough

The role of the Lead Meteorologist and Commodity Analyst is to conduct and communicate commodity analysis that provides Mars with a competitive advantage in price risk management (PRM). The person in this role should have superior understanding of meteorology, modelling, and forecasting, and its relevant impact on agricultural commodity markets. The role will also be responsible for leading ongoing weather research projects to enhance our forecasting capability. Forecasting deliverables are inclusive of all major global crop growing regions for Mars Wrigley Confectionery, Petcare, and Food. In addition to weather research responsibilities, the associate in this role will also be the lead commodity market analyst for 2 global sourcing categories. The expertise and information provided by this role will be a primary factor in managing price risk for Mars Inc. primes spend through the implementation of PRM cover strategies. The location of this role is Slough with flexible working from home option possible.

What are we looking for?

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology, preferred Master’s Degree in Meteorology
  • Advanced experience with global weather forecasting
  • Preferred experience in agriculture, economics, or commodity markets
  • Good in communicating complex analysis to a broad, diverse audience
  • Advanced analytical experience in programs e.g. Excel, Python etc.
  • Fluent in English

What would be your key responsibilities?

  • This role’s key responsibilities enable business units to achieve a competitive advantage in price and supply risk management for Mars Inc’s primes spend.
  • Provide global weather outlooks for all stages of agricultural crop development across multiple geographies.
  • Create quantitative forecast models using standard statistical approaches, and data mining methods
  • Lead commodity market analysis for 2 global categories. Work closely with global buyers and the category director to translate market insights into strategy.
  • Deliver tradable insights that rely on the utilization of his or her knowledge in meteorology, agricultural science, and economics through accurate and timely forecasts
  • Lead the identification, development and implementation of weather research projects to enhance Mars’ forecasting ability and sustain delivery of advantageous information
  • Actively share unique insights, challenge market assumptions and reach consensus with internal stakeholders as it related to shaping PRM strategies
