ADAS Horticulture, part of the RSK Group, works closely with the industry. Horticulture faces huge challenges to increase marketable yields for diverse crop types, whilst using fewer natural resources to minimise environmental impact. Reducing the water and carbon footprints of horticulture production, has promoted new insights and innovative practice for energy management in both protected and field based systems. Labour availability is becoming a critical issue for many horticulture businesses and automation / robotics is becoming an important option for many businesses to consider to remain viable (e.g. Breaking the Chain (2017). Food and Drink Federation, 28pp). Maintaining high crop health and produce quality is essential for efficient and economically competitive production. Sustainable pest, disease and weed control is challenged by constant biological evolution to overcome control methods, increasingly stringent pesticide regulation and changing production systems.
