Job Overview

Southern Water is currently going through a Digital transformation which will strategically change the way it delivers IT support and services to its business and end users.

This position is part of the Digital – Database Services team & you can expect to liaise with immediate team members as well as other Digital and Business teams within Southern Water.

As an SQL Server Database Administrator at Southern Water you will be working with our latest technology, providing database admin services across the SQL Server infrastructure within Southern Water.

You will take a lead on projects, support & mentor other team members to build the skills of our team, advise & contribute to architectural solutions and pro-actively provide solutions to continuously improve our offering to our business partners.

You will be playing a vital role working on the transformational journey working with a state-of-the-art data centre environment and going forwards, a growing cloud focus. Within this role, you will be working on, maintaining, upgrading and migrating SQL Server databases from legacy versions, 2000 onwards, to SQL Server 2022.

The role encompasses a 24x7 out of hours standby capability which is governed by a pre-defined rota, generally one week in 4.

Responsibilities Will Include

• SQL Database Administration including installation and maintenance of Availability Groups.
• Test, start-up, shutdown, housekeeping, restores, backup and recovery for production and non-production environments.
• Tuning, installing software, maintenance and support.
• Troubleshooting and issue resolution for all database components.
• Ensure HA, DR and Backups are configured correctly and available.
• Perform updates & patching in all database environments.
• Provide advanced scripting techniques to automate processes.
• Writing and reviewing database documentation, including standards, procedures & designs.
• Ensuring instance and data security complies with SW (Southern Water) policies.
• Support and mentor others, including building cross functional capability across the team
  
  

About You

• You will be a motivated and experienced Database Administrator, willing to take ownership of your workloads, contribute to the team and be able to work independently.
• You will be highly knowledgeable in SQL Server and ideally have some experience of either Oracle or PostgreSQL as you may need to support these other areas from time to time.
• You have a knowledge of the installation and maintenance of SQL Server in a virtualised environment.
• Experience of Implementation and monitoring of Availability Groups.
• Knowledge of security best practices
• You will have a flexible attitude with the ability to adapt well to changing environments and demands and able to work with both agile and waterfall projects & exposure to jira will be beneficial
  
  

Package

This role will be full time Monday to Friday on a shift pattern between 7am and 5.30pm plus on call one week in four.

Southern Water operate a hybrid approach to working between our Durrington office and home with regular team meetings in the office.
