This is an outstanding opportunity to be intimately involved in the UK air industry and to add to the way General Aviation (GA) is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). As the authority it is our responsibility to ensure the regulation of a safe GA sector is proportionate and recognises the potential for delegation, deregulation, and innovation. Passionate about regulating recreational aviation, the GA Unit oversee private pilot licensing, operations, aircraft airworthiness, air displays and has oversight of ex-military aircraft.
We’re looking for someone to join the team to support the UK Government’s vision to make the UK the best place in the world for General Aviation.
The Role
As the Air Display Flight Standards Officer, you’ll assist in the delivery of the Air Display Regulation Programme. Additionally, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivery of regulatory change and the embedding of guidance and processes, as part of the CAA’s air display regulatory environment.
Oversight of UK GA activity will form an important part of your role as you’ll ensure the agreed safety and performance standards are met. In doing so you’ll prepare and issue Permissions, Exemptions, Approvals and Variations, undertaking inspecting audits and oversight tasks as required.
The role will involve working with both internal and external partners as you’ll have to collaborate closely, while also providing support and expertise on GA matters. You’ll advise UK industry on changes in legislation and regulatory requirements to ensure their views are represented. It is therefore crucial that you are able to communicate, both verbally and in writing, to a high standard.
About You
- Should possess an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of aircraft operations gained through flying experience as well as a sound knowledge of the UK air display industry
- Must hold or have held a Private or Professional Pilot Licence. Although, substantial relevant industry regulatory experience could be considered as an alternative.
- Demonstrable experience in making, proportionate and consistent, risk-based decisions and judgements.
- You should represent a flexible, committed and customer centric approach with a proven track record of working under pressure. We are looking for a great teammate with a willingness to adopt new working methods with a positive approach to problem solving.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, will be required to deal with people tactfully, diplomatically, and authoritatively at all levels.
What Can We Offer You?
This is a unique opportunity to be intimately involved in the UK air industry and input to the delivery of UK regulatory oversight in this field. As the flying season progresses and your experience grows, there will be the opportunity to spend larger parts of your working day carrying our audit and oversight related activity amongst the wider GA community.
